What You'll See
The Experience
What to Expect
ZigZag Whitsundays operates one of the most generous Whitehaven Beach day trips in the region. Their 80-passenger catamaran delivers you to the beach for five full hours with unlimited shuttle transfers between the boat and shore, a buffet lunch, guided lookout walk, and a snorkelling session. The key differentiator is flexibility — rather than following a rigid schedule with the group, you move between the beach and the boat at your own pace.
The catamaran anchors in the sheltered waters off Whitehaven and runs a continuous tender service to the beach. Want to snorkel first thing, then head to shore? Done. Prefer to spend the morning on the sand and return to the boat for lunch in the shade? Your call. This freedom makes it feel less like a structured tour and more like a private beach day with catering.
The Itinerary
Departure is from Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach early morning. The cruise through the Whitsunday Passage takes around 90 minutes aboard the stable, spacious catamaran. Tea, coffee, and light refreshments are available during the crossing.
On arrival at Whitehaven Beach, the tender service begins immediately. You're free to head straight to the sand or stay on the boat and snorkel from the back platform first. Snorkelling equipment — masks, fins, stinger suits — is all included. The fringing reef near the anchorage has decent coral cover and plenty of tropical fish, turtles, and the occasional reef shark.
The guided Hill Inlet lookout walk departs at a set time (your crew will announce it). This 20-minute bushwalk climbs to the famous viewpoint where the white silica sand swirls through turquoise water in patterns that change with every tide. It's the most photographed spot in the Whitsundays, and the guides share the geological and Indigenous history of the area.
Lunch is a buffet spread served onboard — fresh salads, wraps, grilled items, tropical fruit, and cold drinks. The catamaran has plenty of shaded seating, so it's a comfortable place to eat and recharge before heading back to the beach for the afternoon.
The five hours pass quickly. Most guests do two or three beach-to-boat shuttles over the course of the day, mixing swimming, sunbathing, snorkelling, and boat time. The return cruise arrives back at Airlie Beach in the late afternoon.
Who It's For
ZigZag suits travellers who want extended Whitehaven Beach time with the flexibility to do their own thing. Families appreciate the unlimited transfers — parents can take kids back to the boat for lunch and a rest without ending the beach day. Couples who want to linger on the sand rather than rushing between tour stops will love the pace.
The 80-passenger capacity hits a middle ground between the large Cruise Whitsundays vessels and the small Ocean Rafting boats. It's big enough to be stable and comfortable, small enough that the beach doesn't feel overcrowded when everyone's ashore.
Photographers and anyone who wants morning and afternoon light on the beach will value the five-hour window — most other tours give you two to three hours at best.
Good to Know
- Five hours on Whitehaven means serious sun exposure — reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and UV protective clothing are essential
- The unlimited shuttle means you don't need to carry everything to the beach at once — leave gear on the boat and come back for it
- Bring a waterproof bag for electronics on the tender ride
- The snorkelling is from the boat, not the beach — the reef is around the anchorage point
- This tour doesn't visit the outer Great Barrier Reef — it's a beach and fringing reef experience
- Book the morning departure for the calmest conditions and best snorkelling visibility
