The Experience
What to Expect
Whitsunday Escape operates the largest bareboat charter fleet in the Whitsundays, with approximately 40 vessels covering every type of boat you might want — monohull sailing yachts, sailing catamarans, and power boats ranging from compact couples' boats to spacious catamarans that sleep eight or more. The sheer size of the fleet means there is almost always a vessel available that matches your group size, budget, and preferred style of cruising.
The experience begins at Abel Point Marina in Airlie Beach. After check-in, you receive a comprehensive briefing on your specific vessel — engine systems, sail handling (if applicable), anchoring, navigation electronics, and safety procedures. Whitsunday Escape also provides a detailed cruising guide that is the accumulated knowledge of hundreds of charters distilled into practical advice: where to anchor in different wind conditions, which reefs have the best snorkelling, where to find sheltered water when the wind picks up, and the logistics of visiting Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, and the popular snorkelling bays.
Once the briefing is complete, the islands are yours. A bareboat charter means complete freedom — no schedule, no guide, no itinerary unless you want one. Most charterers head north towards the outer islands on day one, working their way through anchorages like Nara Inlet (with its ancient Aboriginal rock art), Butterfly Bay, Blue Pearl Bay, and Maureen's Cove. Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet are typically mid-charter highlights, best visited early in the morning before the day-trip boats arrive.
The variety in Whitsunday Escape's fleet is a genuine advantage. Sailing purists can choose a performance monohull and work the trade winds between islands. Families or groups wanting stability and space can take a catamaran with multiple cabins and a wide, stable deck. Power boaters who prefer to motor can select a power catamaran and cover more distance per day. Each vessel type offers a different character of experience, and the Whitsunday Escape team helps match you to the right boat during the booking process.
Who It's For
Bareboat chartering appeals to a broad range of travellers. Experienced sailors love the Whitsundays because the conditions are ideal — consistent trade winds, sheltered waters, and well-charted anchorages. But you do not need to be a seasoned sailor. Whitsunday Escape assesses your experience level and provides instruction tailored to your ability. Groups of friends, multi-generational families, and couples all charter bareboats. The per-person cost, split across a group, is often comparable to or less than a multi-day sailing tour — with the added benefit of complete privacy and flexibility.
Good to Know
- From approximately $500 per day depending on vessel size and season — larger boats split between more people can be excellent value
- No formal licence required in Australia, but you must demonstrate competence to the satisfaction of the briefing team
- Provisioning available: order groceries, drinks, and ice delivered to the boat before departure
- Peak season (June–October) has the best weather. Shoulder season (April–May, November) offers lower prices and fewer boats on the water
- Minimum charter is usually 3 nights. Five to seven nights is the sweet spot for covering the best of the Whitsundays
- Skippered charters available if you want the bareboat experience with a qualified skipper handling navigation
- The Whitsundays are one of the best bareboat destinations in the world — 74 islands in a protected cruising area with warm water year-round
