The Experience
Tall Ship Sailing Without the Full Three Days
Not everyone has three days to spare. The Solway Lass two-day trip covers the Whitsunday essentials — Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, and reef snorkelling — on a vessel with more character than anything else on the water. You still get the full tall ship experience: sails hoisted by hand, timber decks, and a night sleeping on the ocean.
At $355 including all meals and accommodation, it sits in a sweet spot between budget day trips and the premium liveaboard options.
Day One
8:00 AM — Board at Abell Point Marina. The crew run through the safety briefing while the ship prepares to depart. The Solway Lass is a working tall ship built in 1902, and the boarding process sets the tone. This is not a modern catamaran. The brass fittings, rope rigging, and worn timber have the feel of a vessel that has earned its place on the water.
9:30 AM — Under sail. The crew raise the traditional rig and the ship leans into the Whitsunday breeze. Passengers are welcome to help with the ropes, and the crew will explain every line and sail if you ask. Most people end up sitting on the bowsprit net, legs dangling over the water, watching dolphins ride the bow wave.
11:30 AM — Snorkelling stop at a sheltered reef. The inner Whitsunday reefs are colourful and accessible, with turtles, clownfish, and parrotfish the most common sightings. All gear is provided and the crew are in the water to assist nervous swimmers.
12:30 PM — Lunch on board. Fresh, generous, and enough to fuel an afternoon of activity.
2:30 PM — Whitehaven Beach. The ship anchors off the northern end and the crew tender you ashore. From the beach, a guided bushwalk leads up to the Hill Inlet lookout. The view from the top — swirling white sand meeting turquoise water — is the postcard image of the Whitsundays. You have over an hour to explore the beach, swim, and take photos.
5:00 PM — Back on board, the ship sails to an evening anchorage. Paddleboards and kayaks come out for anyone with energy left. The late afternoon light on the water is warm and golden.
7:00 PM — Dinner at anchor. The cook puts out a proper meal, and the evening drifts into conversation, stargazing, and early sleep. On a clear night, the Milky Way is so bright it reflects off the water.
Day Two
7:00 AM — Breakfast on deck. Coffee, toast, cereal, fruit, and the kind of quiet morning you only get at anchor in a bay with no phone reception.
8:30 AM — Second snorkelling session at a different site. Morning light underwater is noticeably better — the colours are sharper and the visibility often extends beyond ten metres.
10:30 AM — Sails up for the return journey. The crew make the most of the wind, and if conditions are right, the ship moves under sail alone. The return leg is relaxed, with lunch served as the Whitsunday Islands slip past.
2:00 PM — Arrive back at Abell Point Marina.
The Ship
The Solway Lass has shared cabins with bunk beds, fresh linen, hot showers, and proper toilets. It is comfortable but not luxurious. The real appeal is sleeping on a hundred-year-old tall ship in a quiet bay, with nothing but water sounds and stars.
Who Should Book This
The two-day Solway Lass trip is ideal for travellers who want more than a day trip but cannot commit to three days. It covers the headline Whitsunday sights, includes genuine sailing under canvas, and the overnight element adds a dimension that no day trip can match. It works well for couples, solo travellers, and small groups who appreciate the character of an old ship over the polish of a modern vessel.
