The Experience

See the Great Barrier Reef Without an Overnight Trip

Most visitors to Airlie Beach come for the Whitsunday Islands, but the outer Great Barrier Reef is within day-trip distance — and the Reef Pontoon trip is the easiest way to experience it. A high-speed catamaran takes you 60 kilometres offshore to a permanent pontoon platform anchored at Hardy Reef, one of the most pristine sections of the reef system.

The pontoon is the key advantage here. Rather than snorkelling from a moving boat, you have a stable platform with ladders, showers, shaded seating, and direct access to the reef in every direction. It's the closest thing to having your own private reef base.

Itinerary

7:30 AM — Check in at Abell Point Marina. Morning tea served on the catamaran with coffee, tea, and pastries.

8:00 AM — Depart for Hardy Reef. The journey takes roughly two hours aboard a modern, air-conditioned catamaran. Use the time to eat breakfast, watch the islands pass, or listen to the marine biologist's reef briefing.

10:00 AM — Arrive at the reef pontoon. For the next four hours, the platform is your base.

10:15 AM - 2:30 PM — Free time to snorkel, explore, and relax. The activities run continuously:

  • Snorkelling — Unlimited access straight off the pontoon. The reef starts immediately below the platform, so you're swimming over coral within seconds of entering the water. Equipment provided and fitted by staff.
  • Underwater Observatory — A windowed chamber below the pontoon where you can see the reef without getting wet. Ideal for non-swimmers, young children, or anyone who just wants to sit and watch the fish.
  • Semi-Submersible Tour — A glass-bottomed boat that takes you on a guided circuit of the reef. The marine biologist on board identifies coral species and fish as you go.
  • Optional Extras — Introductory scuba diving (no experience needed, from $165), certified diving, and helicopter scenic flights over the reef are available on the day.

12:00 PM — Buffet lunch on the pontoon. Hot and cold options, salads, bread rolls, and fruit. Better than you'd expect for a platform in the middle of the ocean.

2:30 PM — Depart for Airlie Beach with afternoon tea served on the return journey.

4:30 PM — Arrive back at Abell Point Marina.

What You'll See

Hardy Reef is part of the outer reef system, which means the coral is healthier, the water is clearer, and the marine life is more diverse than the inner fringing reefs around the islands. Visibility regularly exceeds 15 metres.

Expect to see staghorn and plate corals in blues, purples, and greens, along with hundreds of fish species. Highlights include Maori wrasse (the massive, friendly ones that approach snorkellers), clownfish, reef sharks, giant clams, sea turtles, and the occasional manta ray during migration season.

Who It's For

This trip is the best option for anyone who wants to see the Great Barrier Reef but isn't a strong swimmer. Between the underwater observatory, the semi-submersible, and the supervised snorkelling straight off the pontoon, there's no pressure to be confident in open water.

Families with young children do well here — the pontoon has enclosed swimming areas, shade, and toilets. Older travellers who want reef access without the physical demands of a boat-based snorkelling trip will also find it comfortable.

Keen snorkellers get their money's worth too. Four hours of unlimited reef access from a stable platform is generous, and the outer reef quality is visibly superior to the island reefs closer to shore.

Practical Tips

The catamaran is large and stable, but the two-hour crossing can get choppy. Take seasickness medication before boarding if you're prone. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and a towel. Everything else is provided.
