What You'll See
The Experience
What to Expect
The Southern Lights is Ocean Rafting's signature full-day tour and the only Whitsunday day trip that visits both the south and north ends of Whitehaven Beach. Where the Northern Exposure heads straight to the quiet northern section, Southern Lights gives you the complete picture — two distinct stretches of the world's most famous beach, the iconic Hill Inlet lookout, and a reef snorkelling session to round out the day.
You'll travel aboard Ocean Rafting's purpose-built semi-rigid inflatable. These boats sit low to the water, cruise fast, and handle the Whitsunday Passage comfortably. The ride out is part of the experience — expect sea spray, big grins, and a genuine sense of adventure before you even hit the sand.
The Itinerary
The day starts at Abell Point Marina with a safety briefing and boarding. From there, the raft powers south through the Whitsunday Passage towards Whitehaven's southern end — the long, wide stretch of silica sand that most visitors picture when they think of this beach. You'll have time to swim, walk, and take in the sheer scale of the place.
Next, the boat repositions to the northern end of Whitehaven where a guided bushwalk leads up to the Hill Inlet lookout. This is the view you've seen on every Whitsundays brochure — swirling sand banks shifting between shades of turquoise and white as the tide moves. Your guide explains the geology of the 98% pure silica sand and the Ngaro Aboriginal history of the islands.
After lunch — served on the beach with wraps, fresh tropical fruit, and cold drinks — you'll head to a sheltered fringing reef for the afternoon snorkel. All equipment is provided including wetsuits and stinger suits when needed. Guides join you in the water, pointing out sea turtles, reef sharks, clownfish, giant clams, and the kaleidoscope of tropical fish that call these reefs home.
The return trip has you back at the marina by mid-afternoon.
Who It's For
Southern Lights suits anyone who wants to see the full Whitehaven experience rather than just one section. It's family friendly with children from age 3 welcome, and the crew are experienced at keeping everyone comfortable regardless of swimming ability. Couples and solo travellers will appreciate the small group size — these boats carry a maximum of 25 guests, so you never feel crowded on the beach.
The semi-rigid raft does bounce through chop on occasion, so take seasickness medication beforehand if you're prone. The Hill Inlet walk is a short uphill track with some steps — manageable for most fitness levels.
