The Experience

The Northern Exposure is Ocean Rafting's flagship tour — and for good reason. Where other day trips give you a taste of the Whitsundays, this one throws you in headfirst.

You board a purpose-built semi-rigid inflatable at Abell Point Marina and within minutes you're cutting through the Whitsunday Passage at speed. The ride is half the experience — salt spray, turquoise water rushing past, islands appearing on the horizon. It's immediately clear this isn't a gentle cruise.

The two snorkelling stops at Hook Island put you on fringing reefs that start in waist-deep water. Green turtles are common, clownfish peek from their anemone homes, and the coral is healthy and colourful. Guides are in the water with you, pointing out things you'd miss on your own.

Then comes Whitehaven. The northern end is quieter than the south — most boats drop at the main beach, but Ocean Rafting takes you to the section that feels untouched. The sand is 98% pure silica, so fine it squeaks underfoot and doesn't retain heat. Even at midday you can walk barefoot.

The Hill Inlet lookout is a 10-minute bushwalk from the beach. From the top, the view is exactly what you've seen on postcards — except photos genuinely cannot capture the shifting turquoise and white patterns. Your guide explains the geology and Ngaro Aboriginal heritage while you take it in.

Lunch is served on the beach — generous wraps, tropical fruit, and cold drinks. Then the ride back, which feels even faster with the afternoon sea breeze behind you.
