Overview
Scenic flight over Heart Reef and the Great Barrier Reef plus a full Ocean Rafting day tour to Whitehaven Beach and snorkelling.
What You'll See
The Experience
What to Expect
This combo tour is the ultimate Whitsundays day — a scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef followed by a full Ocean Rafting adventure to Whitehaven Beach and the fringing reefs. You see the islands from above and below the waterline, all in a single day. If you're visiting the Whitsundays once and want to see everything, this is the tour to book.
The scenic flight lasts roughly one hour and covers Heart Reef, the outer Great Barrier Reef, Hill Inlet from the air, and the scattered islands of the Whitsunday group. The aerial perspective of Heart Reef — a naturally formed coral formation in the shape of a heart — is something you simply cannot see from a boat. Sit on the left side of the aircraft for the best views on the outbound leg.
The Itinerary
The flight typically departs from Whitsunday Airport (a short drive from Airlie Beach) in the morning. Your pilot doubles as a guide, narrating the landscape below as you pass over the Whitsunday Islands, the turquoise lagoons, and out to the ribbon of reef that runs along the continental shelf. Heart Reef appears below, vivid and unmistakable. You'll also fly over the patterns of Hill Inlet — giving you a preview of what you'll walk to later that day.
After landing, you transfer to Abell Point Marina to join the Ocean Rafting tour. From here the day follows the standard itinerary: a fast ride across the passage aboard the semi-rigid raft, time on Whitehaven Beach, the guided Hill Inlet lookout walk (which hits differently after you've seen it from 1,500 feet), lunch on the sand, and an afternoon snorkelling session on a sheltered fringing reef.
The combination of aerial and water-level perspectives gives you a complete understanding of this ecosystem — the sheer scale of the reef from above, then the intimate detail of individual coral formations and tropical fish while snorkelling.
Who It's For
This combo is designed for visitors who want the definitive Whitsundays experience without spreading it across multiple days. It's particularly popular with honeymooners, milestone birthday travellers, and international visitors on a tight itinerary. At $409 per person it's a premium day out, but it combines what would otherwise be two separate bookings.
Families with children are welcome on both the flight and the raft tour. The scenic flight is smooth and the small aircraft are well-maintained. Children under 3 may travel free on the raft portion (check at booking).
Good to Know
- Book early in your trip — flights are weather dependent and may need to be rescheduled
- The flight and raft portions can run in either order depending on scheduling
- Bring a camera with a clean lens for the flight — phone cameras work well through the aircraft windows
- No drones allowed over the reef or national parks
- Reef-safe sunscreen only — chemical sunscreens damage the coral you're flying over and snorkelling on
- Total active time is around 9-10 hours including transfers between airport and marina
