The Experience

The Outer Reef Trip That Changes Everything

Most Whitsunday sailing trips stay in the inner islands, visiting fringing reefs that are pleasant but nothing extraordinary. Kiana does something different. This yacht sails all the way out to Bait Reef on the Outer Great Barrier Reef, where the coral is pristine, the marine life is larger and more abundant, and the visibility regularly exceeds 20 metres. It is the difference between looking at the reef and being immersed in it.

With a maximum of 18 guests, air-conditioned cabins, and your first scuba dive included free, Kiana sits in a category above the backpacker boats without crossing into luxury pricing.

Day One

8:00 AM — Board at Abell Point Marina. The crew introduce the boat, show you to your cabin, and run through the itinerary. Kiana is a purpose-built sailing catamaran with proper headroom below deck, hot showers, and air conditioning that actually works. After weeks on the water in tropical Queensland, these details matter.

9:30 AM — Sail towards the Whitsunday Islands. The catamaran is stable and fast, cutting through the water without the rolling motion that catches people off guard on monohulls.

11:30 AM — First snorkelling stop at a sheltered island reef. The crew brief you on technique and marine life identification before you get in. Turtles, reef sharks, and giant trevally are frequent visitors to these sites.

12:30 PM — Lunch on board. The food on Kiana is a genuine highlight. The cook prepares fresh meals in a proper galley — think grilled fish, Asian salads, homemade bread, and fruit platters.

2:30 PM — Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. The guided walk to the lookout is the classic Whitsunday experience, and from there you descend to the beach for swimming and exploring.

6:00 PM — Anchor in a sheltered bay. Dinner on board, followed by a briefing for the next day's diving.

Day Two — The Outer Reef

6:30 AM — Early start. The sail to Bait Reef takes a few hours, and the crew want you there when the light is best.

9:30 AM — Arrive at Bait Reef. This is it. The water changes colour as you cross onto the outer reef — deep navy giving way to brilliant turquoise over the coral. Bait Reef is a series of coral bommies rising from the ocean floor, creating underwater towers covered in hard and soft coral with fish life swirling around them.

10:00 AM — Introductory scuba dive. Your first dive is included free, guided by a qualified dive instructor in a ratio of no more than four divers to one instructor. The dive reaches a maximum depth of around 10 metres, which is deep enough to experience the reef up close. Manta rays, reef sharks, giant Maori wrasse, and thousands of tropical fish are common at Bait Reef. The visibility out here is on another level compared to the inner reefs.

11:30 AM — Snorkelling session. Even from the surface, Bait Reef is spectacular. The bommies rise to within a metre of the surface in places, so snorkellers see everything the divers do.

12:30 PM — Lunch, then optional second dive (additional cost of approximately $60-$80 per dive).

3:00 PM — Sail back towards the islands for the evening anchorage.

Day Three

7:00 AM — Breakfast, then a final snorkelling session at a different reef site.

10:00 AM — Sail back to Airlie Beach with lunch on the way.

3:00 PM — Arrive at Abell Point Marina.

Why Kiana Stands Out

The combination of the Outer Reef and air-conditioned cabins makes Kiana unique in the Whitsunday market. Budget boats stay in the inner islands. Premium boats charge over $1,200. Kiana delivers an outer reef experience with comfortable accommodation at a price that represents genuine value.

The free introductory dive is worth approximately $150 on its own, making the effective price for the sailing trip closer to $700. For certified divers, additional dives are available at reduced rates.
