The Experience

The Whitsundays at Full Throttle

If the idea of sitting on a boat while someone else drives doesn't appeal to you, the Jet Ski Island Explorer puts you in control. This guided 1.5-hour tour takes you from the Airlie Beach foreshore out through Pioneer Bay and around the nearby Whitsunday Islands on your own jet ski.

No experience is necessary. The briefing covers everything — how to start, stop, steer, and handle wake from other boats. Within five minutes of getting on, most people are comfortable and grinning. The jet skis are modern, stable, and powerful enough to be thrilling without being intimidating.

How the Tour Works

Pre-Ride Briefing (15 minutes)

You meet your guide at the foreshore launch point. After signing in and gearing up with a life jacket and waterproof phone pouch, the guide walks you through the jet ski controls on dry land. They cover hand signals used during the ride, the formation you'll travel in, and the rules of the water.

The Ride (1.5 hours)

The group heads out of the harbour in single file, getting comfortable with the machines in the calm water behind the breakwall. Once everyone's settled, the guide opens up the throttle and you cruise across Pioneer Bay towards the islands.

The route varies depending on conditions, but typically covers:

Round-top Island — A small, uninhabited island just offshore where you'll slow down to spot sea turtles in the shallows. The water here is clear enough to see the sandy bottom, and turtles are regulars.

Daydream Island Channel — A narrow passage between the mainland and Daydream Island with views of the resort and surrounding reef. The guide pauses here for photos with the island backdrop.

Hidden Bays — The jet skis can access shallow, sheltered bays that larger tour boats can't reach. These pockets of calm water surrounded by bushland are some of the most peaceful spots in the region, made more dramatic by the fact that you just arrived at speed.

Open Water Stretch — On the return leg, the guide finds a safe stretch of open water and lets the group experience the full speed of the machines. This is the bit that gets posted on social media — flat water, full throttle, islands in every direction.

Who It's For

The Island Explorer works for couples, friends, and anyone looking for an activity that doesn't take up the whole day. At 1.5 hours, it fits neatly into a morning or afternoon and leaves time for other plans.

Drivers must be 16 or older with a valid driver's licence (car licence is fine — no boat licence required). Passengers can be any age provided they can hold on comfortably. Two people can ride per jet ski, so it's a good option for couples or a parent with a child.

Solo travellers enjoy this tour because it's social without being forced — you're riding your own machine but sharing the experience with a small group.

What to Bring

Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet — board shorts and a rash vest are ideal. Sunglasses with a strap are recommended. Sunscreen should be applied before arrival as there's no time once the briefing starts. The waterproof phone pouch is provided, so bring your phone for photos.

Practical Details

Tours run multiple times daily, with morning sessions generally offering calmer water. Afternoon tours catch better light for photos. The tour departs rain or shine — wet weather riding is still fun, and the guides adjust the route to find sheltered water if needed. Only extreme weather (strong wind warnings) causes cancellations.
