The Experience
See It From Above, Then Swim In It
Most visitors to the Whitsundays choose between seeing the Great Barrier Reef from the air or snorkelling it from a boat. The Heart Reef Escapade does both in a single three-hour experience. You fly by helicopter over Heart Reef and the outer reef system, then land on a reef pontoon and snorkel some of the most pristine coral on the planet. It is the complete reef experience compressed into a morning or afternoon.
At $880, this is a premium outing. But consider what it replaces — a scenic helicopter flight ($660) plus a full-day reef boat trip ($250+). The Escapade combines both in three hours, with the added advantage of reaching reef that most boat-based tours cannot access.
The Helicopter Flight
Takeoff & Islands
The experience begins at Whitsunday Airport, where you board the helicopter and lift off over the coast. The flight path takes you across the Whitsunday Islands, and the pilot provides commentary through headsets as the archipelago unfolds below. You pass over sheltered bays dotted with yachts, the dramatic cliffs of Hook Island, and the turquoise channels between the islands.
Heart Reef
As the helicopter crosses from the inner islands to the outer reef, the water beneath changes character. The shallow turquoise of the island fringes gives way to deep ocean blue, then suddenly the reef appears — vast coral formations visible beneath the surface. The pilot approaches Heart Reef and hovers, allowing passengers to photograph the iconic heart-shaped coral from directly above.
Heart Reef is part of Hardy Reef and sits in a protected zone. It measures roughly 17 metres across and its distinctive shape is unmistakable from the air. The helicopter's ability to hover means you get extended time over the site — not just a quick flyover.
Landing
The helicopter descends to a permanent reef pontoon anchored on the outer reef. This is your base for the snorkelling portion of the experience. The landing on a pontoon in the middle of the ocean is a moment in itself — stepping out of a helicopter onto a floating platform surrounded by nothing but reef and open water.
Snorkelling the Outer Reef
The Difference
The outer reef is to the inner fringing reefs what a national park is to a suburban garden. The coral is more diverse, more colourful, and in better condition. The fish are larger and more varied. The visibility regularly exceeds 15-20 metres, meaning you can see the reef structure stretching away beneath you in every direction.
What You Will See
The pontoon is positioned over a section of reef that rises from the deep to within a few metres of the surface. You snorkel directly off the pontoon into water teeming with life. Giant clams — some nearly a metre across — sit among the coral. Schools of fusiliers and surgeonfish swirl around the bommies. Parrotfish crunch on coral, and reef sharks patrol the edges with calm indifference.
Depending on the season and conditions, you may also see manta rays, eagle rays, or the resident Maori wrasse that frequent the pontoon area. The crew guide you to the best sections and point out marine life you might otherwise miss.
Time on the Pontoon
You have approximately 90 minutes on the pontoon, which is enough for two solid snorkelling sessions with a break in between. Refreshments are available on the pontoon. All snorkelling equipment is provided, including stinger suits during the warmer months.
The Return Flight
The helicopter collects you from the pontoon and flies back to Whitsunday Airport. The return route may differ from the outbound flight, giving you views of additional reef formations and islands. Total time from airport departure to return is approximately three hours.
Who This Is For
The Heart Reef Escapade is designed for people who want the reef experience without spending an entire day on a boat. It suits travellers with limited time, those who prefer premium experiences over budget options, and anyone celebrating a special occasion. The combination of helicopter and snorkelling creates a narrative — you see the reef from above, understanding its scale, then descend into it and experience the detail up close. The contrast between the two perspectives is what makes this experience genuinely unique.
Swimmers should be comfortable in open water. The reef is deep beyond the pontoon area, and while the snorkelling sites are sheltered, this is the open ocean rather than a protected bay.
