The Experience

What to Expect

Journey to the Heart is the most exclusive reef experience in the Whitsundays. You fly by helicopter from Hamilton Island directly to Heart Island — a pontoon anchored on the Great Barrier Reef itself, near the famous Heart Reef. The helicopter passes over Heart Reef en route, giving you the aerial photograph that graces a million postcards, then lands on the pontoon where you spend several hours snorkelling, dining, and experiencing the reef from its surface.

This is not a crowded day-trip pontoon. Heart Island is a purpose-built, premium platform with limited guest numbers, creating an atmosphere closer to a private reef experience than a group tour. The setting is extraordinary — you are anchored in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef, surrounded by coral in every direction, with no land visible on the horizon.

The snorkelling here is among the best accessible reef snorkelling anywhere on the Great Barrier Reef. The pontoon sits in a sheltered area with calm, clear water and direct access to coral gardens that are rarely visited. Expect vibrant hard corals, sea turtles, reef fish in incredible density, and visibility that can stretch beyond 20 metres. All equipment is provided, and guided snorkelling sessions help you find the best coral formations and marine life.

Between snorkelling sessions, a gourmet lunch is served on the pontoon. Fresh seafood, local produce, and cold drinks in a setting that no restaurant can replicate — eating lunch while floating on the Great Barrier Reef with turquoise water stretching to every horizon.

The return helicopter flight takes you back over the reef and islands to Hamilton Island, completing what many guests describe as the single best experience of their lives.

Who It's For

At $1,617 per person, this is a premium experience aimed at travellers for whom the Great Barrier Reef is a bucket-list destination and half measures will not do. Honeymooners, significant anniversaries, once-in-a-lifetime international trips, and anyone who wants to experience the reef in the most spectacular and exclusive way possible. It is also Hamilton Island's flagship tour, so guests staying on the island often build their entire trip around this experience.
