The Experience
More Islands, More Time, More of Everything
The GSL Extended Island Flight adds 10 minutes and significantly more coverage compared to the Standard flight. At $99, you get 35 minutes over the Whitsunday Islands with a wider circuit that takes in more of the island chain, additional reef formations, and longer time over the key sights. For an extra $20 over the Standard flight, the extended route is comfortably worth it.
The Route
Departure & Climb
The flight departs from Whitsunday Airport aboard a high-wing Cessna or GAF Nomad, the same aircraft used for the Standard flight. Every seat is a window seat thanks to the high-wing configuration, and the pilot communicates through headsets so commentary is clear even at altitude.
After takeoff, the aircraft climbs to around 3,500 feet and heads out over the coast. Within minutes you are over open water with the Whitsunday Islands spread across the horizon. The pilot identifies each island by name and points out features — resort developments on Hamilton and Daydream, the uninhabited bushland of Hook and Whitsunday, and the tiny rocky outcrops that barely qualify as islands at all.
The Island Circuit
The extended route covers a wider arc of the Whitsunday group than the Standard flight. You pass over or alongside multiple islands, giving you a sense of the scale and variety of the archipelago. Some islands are densely forested mountains rising steeply from the water. Others are flat, fringed with sand, and surrounded by visible reef formations.
The pilot points out fringing reefs, channel markers, sailing yachts at anchor in sheltered bays, and — depending on conditions — marine life visible from altitude. Manta rays and sea turtles can sometimes be spotted in shallow water, though this depends on sea conditions and light angle.
Hill Inlet & Whitehaven Beach
The main event remains Hill Inlet. The aircraft approaches from the north, giving you a long, unobstructed view of the inlet as the tidal patterns come into focus. The swirling sand and water patterns are mesmerising from altitude — the shapes change with every tide, so no two flights see exactly the same view.
The pilot banks the aircraft and makes passes to give both sides of the cabin clear views. With the extended flight time, there is less rush and more opportunity to take photos, absorb the view, and actually appreciate what you are looking at rather than fumbling with a camera.
Whitehaven Beach stretches seven kilometres below — a sliver of impossibly white sand between green bush and blue ocean. The extended route follows the beach for its full length before continuing the circuit.
Additional Coverage
The extra 10 minutes allow the flight to cover areas the Standard route skips. Depending on conditions and the pilot's judgement, this may include views of Hook Island's dramatic cliffs, the passage between Whitsunday and Hamilton Islands, Cid Harbour, or the southern islands that most visitors never see. The pilot tailors the route to conditions, always prioritising the best views.
Return
The aircraft loops back over the coast and lands at Whitsunday Airport. From takeoff to landing, you have been in the air for 35 minutes — long enough to feel like a genuine aerial tour rather than a quick pass.
Standard vs Extended
The Standard flight at $79 covers Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach in 25 minutes. It is excellent value and hits the main attraction. The Extended flight at $99 adds 10 minutes and a wider island circuit. If you can stretch the budget by $20, the extended route gives you more context for the geography of the Whitsundays and more time to enjoy the aerial perspective. For photographers in particular, the additional time makes a meaningful difference.
Booking Tips
Morning flights have calmer air and better light. Afternoon flights can be bumpier due to thermal activity but sometimes offer more dramatic cloud formations. If you are prone to motion sickness, opt for the morning session. The airport is approximately 10 minutes from central Airlie Beach by car, and transfer services can be arranged when booking.
