The Experience
What to Expect
A bareboat charter is the ultimate way to experience the Whitsunday Islands. No fixed itinerary, no group schedule, no rush. You take the helm of a fully equipped yacht, motor or sail out of Abel Point Marina, and spend three to seven nights (or more) exploring 74 islands at your own pace. Anchor in secluded bays, snorkel fringing reefs, visit Whitehaven Beach at sunrise before anyone else arrives, and fall asleep to the sound of water lapping against the hull.
Cumberland Charter Yachts operates one of the most established fleets in the Whitsundays, with 28 vessels ranging from 32 to 58 feet. The fleet includes sailing yachts for those who want to work with the wind, and power catamarans for those who prefer stability and space. Each vessel comes equipped with everything you need — galley, linen, navigation equipment, dinghy with outboard, and comprehensive safety gear.
Before departure, you receive a thorough vessel briefing covering all systems, navigation, anchoring procedures, and local knowledge. Cumberland provides detailed cruising guides and charts that mark the best anchorages, snorkelling spots, and island walks. Their on-water support team is available 24/7 by radio or phone, so you are never truly on your own even when you feel like you are.
A typical itinerary might see you sail north to the outer islands on day one, spend a morning snorkelling at Manta Ray Bay or Blue Pearl Bay, visit Whitehaven Beach mid-week, then work your way back south through a chain of anchorages that only local sailors and bareboat charterers ever see. But the beauty of a bareboat is that there is no typical itinerary. If you find a bay you love, stay an extra night. If the wind shifts, adjust your route. The islands are yours.
Who It's For
Bareboat chartering suits anyone with some boating experience who wants to explore the Whitsundays independently. You do not need a formal sailing licence — Cumberland assesses your experience during the briefing and provides additional instruction if needed. Groups of friends splitting the cost, couples wanting a private sailing holiday, and families with older children all book bareboats. It is also popular with experienced sailors from interstate or overseas who want to sail a new and spectacular cruising ground.
