The Experience
What to Expect
This is the simplest, most affordable way to visit Whitehaven Beach. Cruise Whitsundays operates a large, stable vessel from Port of Airlie that delivers you to the beach and back in around five hours, with two full hours on the sand in between. No snorkelling, no rushing between stops — just a scenic cruise and quality time on one of the world's best beaches.
The vessel is a large high-speed catamaran with air-conditioned interior seating, an open-air upper deck, and a licensed bar. The ride out takes roughly 75 minutes each way, and the onboard commentary covers the islands, wildlife, and history of the Whitsunday Passage as you cruise through.
The Itinerary
Both morning and afternoon departures are available. The morning option typically leaves Port of Airlie around 8am and returns by 1pm. The afternoon departure heads out around midday and returns by 5pm.
During the cruise out, morning or afternoon tea is served — think scones, fruit, and hot drinks. The vessel anchors at the southern end of Whitehaven Beach where you tender ashore via a smaller boat. From there, the beach is yours for two hours.
Whitehaven stretches for seven kilometres of 98% pure silica sand. The southern section where you land has calm, shallow water perfect for wading and swimming. The sand is famously cool underfoot even on hot days. Walk north along the beach, float in the shallows, or simply sit and absorb the view — there are no vendors, no buildings, no noise. Just sand, water, and sky.
After your two hours, the tender collects you and the cruise heads back through the passage to Port of Airlie.
Who It's For
This tour is ideal for travellers who want to see Whitehaven Beach without committing a full day. It works particularly well for families with young children (less time on a boat), older travellers who prefer a stable vessel over a fast raft, and anyone arriving in or departing Airlie Beach the same day.
It's also a smart choice if you're prone to seasickness — the large catamaran handles swell far better than smaller boats, and the shorter duration means less time on the water overall.
Couples looking for a relaxed morning or afternoon rather than an action-packed adventure day will appreciate the pace. There's no snorkelling gear to wrangle, no bushwalks to hurry through. Just the beach.
