The Experience
What to Expect
Reefsuites is unlike anything else in the world. Built into the Reefworld pontoon at Hardy Reef, these are the world's first underwater accommodation suites on the Great Barrier Reef. You sleep five metres below the ocean surface in a private suite with floor-to-ceiling windows that look directly into the reef. Fish drift past your window. Coral sways in the current. At night, the pontoon lights attract marine life, and you fall asleep watching the reef's nocturnal world unfold centimetres from your pillow.
There are only two Reefsuites, each accommodating two guests. On any given night, a maximum of four people experience this. It is, by a considerable margin, the most exclusive overnight experience in the Whitsundays and arguably in all of Australia.
The trip begins with the morning catamaran from Port of Airlie to Hardy Reef — a two-hour cruise across the Coral Sea. You arrive at the Reefworld pontoon and spend the afternoon like a day-tripper: snorkelling the outer reef, exploring the underwater observatory, taking the semi-submarine tour, and eating a buffet lunch. The reef at Hardy is outer Great Barrier Reef at its finest — vibrant coral, giant clams, reef sharks, turtles, and fish in extraordinary density and colour.
When the day-trip catamaran departs in the afternoon, the pontoon empties out. The Reefsuite guests and the small Reefsleep group (who sleep on the upper deck in swags) have the entire platform to themselves. Dinner is a premium multi-course affair served on the open deck — fresh seafood, local produce, and wine as the sun sets over the open ocean.
After dinner, you descend to your Reefsuite. The suite is comfortable and well-appointed, but the windows are the point. The reef is right there, alive and moving, lit by the pontoon's underwater lights. Parrotfish sleeping in mucus cocoons, octopus hunting across the coral, reef sharks patrolling — the night reef is a different world from the daytime, and you watch it from your bed. Many guests report lying awake for hours simply watching.
Morning brings breakfast on the deck, a final snorkelling session, and the return cruise to Airlie Beach.
Who It's For
Reefsuites is a bucket-list experience for travellers who want something genuinely unique. At from $1,200 per person, it is a significant commitment, but there is literally nothing else like it on earth. Honeymooners, proposals, milestone birthdays, and serious marine life enthusiasts are the typical guests. International visitors often plan their entire Great Barrier Reef trip around securing a Reefsuite booking. If you want to tell people you slept underwater on the Great Barrier Reef and watched sharks from your bed, this is how you do it.
Good to Know

- All meals are included and dietary requirements are catered with advance notice
- The two-hour crossing can be rough in poor weather — take seasickness medication proactively
- No phone signal on the reef. There is no Wi-Fi in the suites
- Waterproof cameras are essential for capturing the underwater window views and night reef
- This experience is weather dependent. Cruise Whitsundays will work with you to reschedule if conditions are unsafe
