The Experience

What to Expect

This is the Whitsundays' most popular Great Barrier Reef day trip and the easiest way to experience the outer reef without diving certification or an overnight trip. Cruise Whitsundays takes you to their permanent Reefworld pontoon at Hardy Reef — a floating platform anchored directly on the reef — where you spend three hours snorkelling, exploring the underwater observatory, riding the semi-submarine, and eating a buffet lunch surrounded by open ocean.

Hardy Reef sits on the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef, about two hours by high-speed catamaran from Airlie Beach. The water here is clearer and the coral more vibrant than the fringing reefs closer to the islands. This is the real deal — the living, breathing Great Barrier Reef that stretches for 2,300 kilometres along the Queensland coast.

The Itinerary

The day begins with an early departure from Port of Airlie. The high-speed catamaran cruises through the Whitsunday Passage and out past the islands to the open ocean. Morning tea is served onboard during the two-hour crossing.

On arrival at the Reefworld pontoon, you have three hours to fill however you like. Most people start with snorkelling — all equipment is provided including masks, snorkels, fins, and stinger suits. The pontoon is surrounded by a roped snorkelling area with direct access to the reef. Entry is via a platform at water level, so no jumping required.

For those who prefer to stay dry, the underwater observatory is a glass-walled room below the pontoon's waterline. You'll see coral formations, reef fish, and often sea turtles cruising past the windows. The semi-submarine tour runs several times during your visit — a guided boat ride in a vessel with a glass bottom that cruises slowly over the reef while a marine biologist points out what's below.

A buffet lunch is served on the pontoon with fresh salads, hot dishes, tropical fruit, and unlimited tea and coffee. The pontoon also has shaded seating areas, change rooms, and freshwater showers.

Optional extras available at additional cost include introductory scuba diving (no experience needed, guided by an instructor), certified diving, and helicopter scenic flights directly from the pontoon.

Who It's For

This tour suits anyone who wants to see the Great Barrier Reef, regardless of swimming ability. The underwater observatory and semi-submarine mean even non-swimmers get a genuine reef experience. Families love it because children of all ages can participate in at least one activity. Confident swimmers and snorkellers will spend most of their three hours in the water.

It's also a solid option for older travellers — the pontoon is stable, there are handrails everywhere, and you can spend the entire visit in shaded comfort if you choose.

Good to Know

  • The two-hour crossing can be rough in strong winds — take seasickness medication before departure, not after
  • Introductory scuba diving costs extra ($175 approx) but is worth it if you've never dived before
  • Bring an underwater camera or GoPro — the snorkelling visibility is typically 10-20 metres
  • Reef-safe sunscreen is mandatory and checked by crew
  • The pontoon has limited capacity, so this tour doesn't feel as crowded as the passenger numbers suggest
  • This tour visits the reef only, not Whitehaven Beach — combine with a separate Whitehaven tour for the complete Whitsundays experience
