The Experience
What to Expect
The Reef Adventure combines two of the Whitsundays' most iconic experiences into a single half-day trip — a seaplane flight over the Great Barrier Reef and snorkelling on the outer reef itself. You lift off from the water at Whitsunday Airport, climb over the island chain, and fly directly to Hardy Reef on the outer Great Barrier Reef. The flight alone is worth the price of admission, with aerial views of turquoise shallows, coral formations, and the deep blue of the Coral Sea stretching to the horizon.
The seaplane touches down on the water beside the Hardy Reef pontoon, and from that moment you are standing on the Great Barrier Reef — or rather, floating directly above it. The pontoon provides a stable base with all the equipment you need. Snorkelling gear and stinger suits are provided, and the water around the pontoon is sheltered and calm, making it accessible even for first-time snorkellers. The coral here is vibrant outer reef coral, not the inshore fringing reef you see from island beaches. Expect hard and soft corals in every colour, giant clams, parrotfish, angelfish, and if you are lucky, reef sharks cruising the drop-off.
For those who prefer to stay dry, the glass-bottom boat offers a guided tour of the reef without getting in the water. The guide points out marine life and explains the reef ecosystem as you drift over coral gardens teeming with fish.
Who It's For
This tour suits anyone who wants to see the Great Barrier Reef properly without committing to a full day. The seaplane eliminates the two-hour boat crossing each way, giving you more time on the reef and less time in transit. It is particularly popular with couples, photographers, and international visitors on tight schedules who want maximum impact in minimum time. Families with older children love it too — the combination of the flight and the snorkel keeps everyone engaged.
Good to Know

- You do not need to be a strong swimmer — the pontoon has ladders, shallow areas, and flotation devices
- Morning departures offer calmer conditions and better underwater visibility
- Waterproof cameras are a must — reef photos from this location are exceptional
- The glass-bottom boat runs continuously, so you can alternate between snorkelling and dry viewing
- Weight limits apply on the seaplane — you will be asked for accurate passenger weights at booking
