Whitehaven Beach

Seven kilometres of the purest white silica sand on earth

Why Whitehaven Beach Is Worth the Trip

Whitehaven Beach isn't just another tropical beach — it's regularly voted the best beach in Australia and one of the top beaches in the world. What makes it extraordinary is the sand itself: 98% pure silica, so fine it squeaks beneath your feet, so white it's almost blinding in the midday sun.

The beach stretches for seven kilometres along the eastern side of Whitsunday Island, the largest island in the archipelago. There are no hotels, no shops, no roads — just sand, water, and the fringing rainforest behind.

Hill Inlet — The Iconic View

At the northern tip of Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet is where the tidal waters swirl through the silica sand to create patterns that change with every tide. The lookout walk (about 10 minutes uphill from the beach) offers the view you've seen on every Whitsundays postcard.

Best time for Hill Inlet: Mid-tide, either incoming or outgoing, creates the most dramatic swirling patterns. Your tour guide will time the visit accordingly.

How to Get to Whitehaven Beach

Whitehaven Beach is only accessible by boat, seaplane, or helicopter — there are no roads to the beach. Most visitors arrive on a day tour from Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island.

Tour options:

  • Fast boat (Ocean Rafting): 30 minutes from Airlie Beach. Action-packed, covers more ground
  • Sailing catamaran: 1-2 hours. Relaxed pace, often includes snorkelling
  • Seaplane: 20 minutes. Aerial views of Hill Inlet on the way in
  • Helicopter: 30 minutes. Most dramatic arrival, lands on the beach

What to Bring

  • Reef-safe sunscreen — the sun here is intense, and regular sunscreen damages the reef
  • Water — there are no facilities on the beach
  • A hat and sunglasses — minimal shade on the beach itself
  • Snorkelling gear if your tour doesn't provide it
  • A waterproof phone case — you'll want photos from the shallows

Best Time to Visit

The Whitsundays enjoy a tropical climate, so Whitehaven Beach is beautiful year-round. However:

  • June to September: Dry season, mild temperatures (22-27°C), lowest chance of rain, no stingers. Peak season — book early
  • October to December: Shoulder season, warming up, fewer crowds, occasional rain
  • January to March: Wet season, hot (30°C+), stinger season (tours provide stinger suits), dramatic sunsets
  • April to May: Shoulder season, cooling down, green and lush after the rains

Conservation

Whitehaven Beach sits within the Whitsunday Islands National Park and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Strict rules protect this environment:

  • No collecting shells, coral, or sand
  • No glass containers on the beach
  • All rubbish must be taken with you
  • Stay on marked walking tracks
  • Don't feed wildlife

The silica sand has been here for millions of years — let's keep it that way.
