Whitsunday Islands, Queensland
Hamilton Island
The Whitsundays' resort island with its own airport
The Gateway Island
Hamilton Island is the most developed and accessible of the 74 Whitsunday Islands. It's the only island in the group with a commercial airport, which means you can fly direct from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Cairns and be poolside within an hour of landing. No connecting boats or transfers required — unless you want them.
The island covers about five square kilometres, with the resort areas concentrated on the western side and large stretches of bushland and walking tracks covering the rest. It functions as a self-contained holiday destination with restaurants, bars, a marina, golf course, and multiple accommodation options ranging from holiday apartments to the ultra-luxury Qualia resort.
Where to Stay
Hamilton Island offers accommodation across every price bracket:
- Qualia — Adults-only, consistently ranked among Australia's best luxury resorts. Private pavilions with plunge pools, fine dining, and personalised service. Expect to pay $1,200+ per night
- Reef View Hotel — The island's main hotel, with rooms overlooking the Coral Sea. Mid-range pricing, family-friendly, central location
- Palm Bungalows — Freestanding bungalows set among tropical gardens. Good for couples wanting privacy without the Qualia price tag
- Holiday apartments — Self-contained units in several complexes across the island. Best value for families and groups
Getting Around
No private cars are permitted on Hamilton Island. Everyone gets around by golf buggy — you can rent one or use the free island shuttle bus. It takes about 10 minutes to drive from one end of the developed area to the other. The relaxed pace is part of the charm.
Day Trips and Activities
Hamilton Island is a launching point for the wider Whitsundays. The marina is the departure point for dozens of tours:
- Whitehaven Beach — Half-day or full-day boat trips to the famous white silica sand beach, usually including Hill Inlet lookout
- Great Barrier Reef — Pontoon trips, snorkelling tours, and diving excursions to Hardy Reef and other outer reef locations
- Scenic flights — Helicopter and seaplane tours offering aerial views of Heart Reef and the islands
- Sailing — Bareboat or crewed charters through the Whitsunday Passage
On the island itself, there's bushwalking to Passage Peak (the highest point, with panoramic views), kayaking, jet skiing, go-karting, and a wildlife park with koalas and crocodiles.
Dining
The island has over 10 restaurants and cafes. Standouts include Coca Chu for modern Asian, Bommie for fine dining at the yacht club, and Manta Ray for casual waterfront meals. Qualia's Long Pavilion restaurant is exceptional but reserved for resort guests.
For self-caterers, there's a small IGA supermarket — prices are higher than the mainland, so bring essentials if you're on a budget.
Practical Tips
- Book flights early — Hamilton Island flights are popular and seat capacity is limited. Jetstar and Virgin Australia operate the route
- Buggy hire — Book in advance during school holidays, they sell out
- Stinger season (November to May) — Stinger suits provided for water activities, or swim in the resort pools
- Wi-Fi — Available but patchy in some accommodation areas. Don't expect city-grade connectivity
