Discover Daydream Island

Small Island, Big Experience

Daydream Island is one of the closest Whitsunday Islands to the mainland, sitting just a 30-minute ferry ride from Airlie Beach. At only one kilometre long and 400 metres wide, you can walk the entire island in under an hour. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in accessibility and family-friendly facilities.

The island underwent a $100 million refurbishment and reopened in 2019 as a modern resort destination. It's designed to be easy — easy to get to, easy to navigate, and easy to enjoy whether you're travelling with young children, on a romantic getaway, or visiting for the day.

The Living Reef Lagoon

The centrepiece of Daydream Island is its outdoor Living Reef — one of the largest open-air coral lagoons in the Southern Hemisphere. The lagoon holds over 100 species of marine life, including baby sharks, stingrays, starfish, sea cucumbers, and tropical fish.

Guests can wade into the shallow lagoon for hands-on encounters with marine animals, guided by the island's resident marine biologists. For kids, this is often the highlight of the entire Whitsundays trip — it's like a natural aquarium without the glass.

The resort runs daily feeding sessions and educational talks that are genuinely interesting, not just tourist filler.

Resort Facilities

Daydream Island Resort operates as a single integrated property covering most of the island:

  • Rooms and suites — Ranging from standard rooms to premium suites with ocean views. All were refurbished in the 2019 rebuild
  • Three swimming pools — Including an adults-only pool and a family pool with waterslides
  • Restaurants and bars — Graze (buffet), Inkstone Kitchen and Bar (a la carte), Barefoot Bar (casual poolside), and Mermaids REEFbar (swim-up bar in the pool)
  • Day spa — Treatments using Australian botanicals, with ocean-view treatment rooms
  • Kids' club — Supervised activities for children aged 3-12, free for resort guests

Day Trips to Daydream Island

You don't need to stay overnight to enjoy Daydream Island. Day passes are available and include ferry transfers from Airlie Beach, use of pools and beach areas, and access to the Living Reef. Lunch packages can be added.

A day visit works well if you're based in Airlie Beach and want a resort island experience without committing to full accommodation prices. The ferry schedule allows a solid six to seven hours on the island.

Water Sports and Activities

The calm waters around Daydream Island make it ideal for water-based activities:

  • Kayaking and paddleboarding — Calm bays on both sides of the island, equipment available for hire
  • Jet skiing — Guided tours around the island and through the nearby passage
  • Snorkelling — The fringing reef around the island's southern end has decent coral coverage and fish life
  • Glass-bottom boat tours — A good option if you want to see marine life without getting wet
  • Scenic helicopter flights — Depart from the island's helipad for aerial views of the Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef

Practical Information

  • Ferry transfers — Cruise Whitsundays operates regular services from Port of Airlie (30 minutes) and Hamilton Island (45 minutes)
  • What to bring — Sunscreen, hat, and a cover-up for walking between pool and restaurants. The island is casual, but most restaurants require shoes and shirts at dinner
  • Stinger season — November to May. The pools are stinger-free, and stinger suits are provided for ocean activities
  • Mobile reception — Telstra coverage is reliable. Optus and Vodafone are patchy
  • Accessibility — The island is relatively flat and the resort has accessible rooms and pathways, making it one of the more mobility-friendly Whitsunday options
