Whitsunday Islands, Queensland
Airlie Beach
The mainland gateway to the Whitsunday Islands
The Launchpad for Everything Whitsundays
Airlie Beach is a small coastal town with one main street, a stunning man-made lagoon, and an outsized reputation as the departure point for virtually every Whitsundays adventure. Nearly every sailing trip, reef tour, island day trip, and scenic flight in the region launches from Airlie Beach or its adjacent marinas.
The town sits on the mainland opposite the Whitsunday Islands, tucked into a hillside overlooking Pioneer Bay. With a permanent population of just over 8,000, it punches well above its weight in terms of tourism infrastructure — there are more tour booking offices per square metre here than almost anywhere else in Australia.
Getting to Airlie Beach
- Fly to Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast Airport, PPP) — Jetstar and Virgin Australia operate direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. The airport is a 25-minute drive from Airlie Beach, with shuttle buses and transfers available
- Fly to Hamilton Island — then catch the ferry across to Airlie Beach (about one hour). Some visitors do this in reverse, spending time on the mainland before transferring to Hamilton Island
- Drive — Airlie Beach sits on the Bruce Highway, roughly midway between Brisbane (1,100 km south) and Cairns (620 km north). It's a popular stop on the east coast road trip
The Airlie Beach Lagoon
The centrepiece of town is the free, public swimming lagoon right on the foreshore. It's a large, landscaped saltwater pool surrounded by sandy areas, barbecues, and grassy picnic spots. Open year-round with lifeguards on duty, it's the place where locals and visitors mix.
The lagoon exists partly because the ocean beaches around Airlie aren't ideal for swimming — the water is shallow and muddy at low tide, and stingers are present from November to May. The lagoon solves both problems and gives the town its social hub.
Where to Stay
Airlie Beach has accommodation for every budget:
- Backpacker hostels — Several along the main street, including Magnums and Nomads. Social, affordable, and well-located for nightlife
- Mid-range hotels and apartments — Toscana Village, Martinique Whitsunday, and Airlie Beach Hotel offer good-quality rooms with pools and views
- Luxury — Coral Sea Marina Resort sits right on the marina, and the nearby Pinnacles has apartment-style rooms overlooking the bay
- Airbnb and holiday rentals — Plenty of options in the surrounding hills, often with spectacular views
Eating and Drinking
The main street (Shute Harbour Road) is lined with restaurants, cafes, and bars. Fish D'vine is famous for its seafood and rum bar. Northerlies is the go-to waterfront spot for sunset drinks. Mr Bones does excellent pizza. For a fancier meal, Hemingway's at the marina or Sorrento at the resort deliver.
Saturday mornings bring the Airlie Beach Markets to the foreshore — local produce, crafts, and food stalls worth browsing.
Booking Tours
With dozens of tour operators competing for your business, Airlie Beach is where you compare, negotiate, and book. A few tips:
- Book popular tours in advance during peak season (June to September) — they sell out
- Last-minute standby deals are common in shoulder season if you're flexible
- Multi-day sailing trips depart from Abel Point Marina or Port of Airlie, usually between 7am and 8am
- Ask about group sizes — smaller boats mean a better experience
Beyond the Tours
Airlie Beach itself has more to offer than just a departure point. The Bicentennial Walkway runs along the foreshore with ocean views. Cedar Creek Falls is a 30-minute drive inland — a freshwater swimming hole surrounded by rainforest. Conway National Park has walking tracks through tropical forest with views over the islands.
