Hiring a boat in the Whitsundays gives you something that no day tour can — the freedom to go where you want, when you want, at your own pace. Whether you want a yacht for a week of island-hopping, a motorboat for a day exploring the coastline, or a jet ski for an hour of adrenaline, Airlie Beach has rental options to cover it.
This guide breaks down every type of boat hire available, where to find them, what they cost, and what you need to know before you go.
Types of Boats Available
Sailing Yachts
The classic Whitsunday experience. Sailing yachts are available for bareboat or skippered charter, typically for 3 to 7 nights. Monohulls range from 30 to 55 feet. You sail between islands, anchor in secluded bays, snorkel off the back of the boat, and sleep on board. Pricing starts from $500 per day for a smaller monohull in off-peak season.
For a comprehensive breakdown, see our yacht charter guide.
Catamarans
Catamarans are the most popular charter vessel in the Whitsundays. They are more stable than monohulls, offer significantly more living space, and have shallower drafts that let you anchor closer to shore. Sizes range from 35 to 50 feet, with pricing from around $600 to $1,500 per day. Perfect for families, groups of friends, and anyone who values comfort over sailing performance.

Motor Boats
Power boats and motor cruisers are available for both day hire and multi-day charters. They are faster than sailing vessels, making them a good option for shorter trips where you want to cover more ground. Motor boats range from small half-cabin cruisers (ideal for a day trip to the islands) up to large power catamarans that rival sailing yachts for overnight comfort.
Day hire motorboats start from around $400 to $600 per day for a basic vessel. Larger power catamarans for overnight charters run $800 to $2,000 per day.
Self-Drive Boats
Self-drive boats are smaller vessels — typically aluminium tinnies, half-cabin cruisers, or pontoon boats — that you hire for a half day or full day and drive yourself. No licence is required in Queensland for recreational vessels. You get a safety briefing, a map of where you can go, and off you go. Pricing ranges from $250 to $600 for a full day depending on the vessel.
These are ideal for exploring the coastline around Airlie Beach, visiting nearby islands, and fishing. They generally do not have the range or fuel capacity for a trip to Whitehaven Beach, so manage expectations on distance. Full details on our self-drive boat hire page.
Jet Skis
Jet ski hire is available from Airlie Beach for guided tours or free-ride sessions. Guided jet ski tours run for 1 to 2 hours and take you along the coastline with stops at scenic points. Free-ride hire gives you a defined area to ride in. Pricing starts from around $120 for a 30-minute ride, $180 to $250 for an hour. A Queensland boat licence is not required for jet ski hire operated under a commercial licence.
Tinnies and Dinghies
The most basic and affordable option. Small aluminium tinnies with an outboard motor can be hired for fishing trips or short coastal exploration. Expect to pay $150 to $300 for a half day. These are not suitable for open-water crossings to the islands — they are best for sheltered waters close to shore.
Where to Hire
Coral Sea Marina (Airlie Beach)
Formerly known as Abell Point Marina South, Coral Sea Marina is the newer of the two main marinas in Airlie Beach. It is home to several charter operators and offers modern facilities including restaurants, showers, and provisioning services. Some of the larger charter companies including Charter Yachts Australia operate from here.
Abel Point Marina (Airlie Beach)
The original and largest marina in Airlie Beach, located a short walk from the main street. Cumberland Charter Yachts and Whitsunday Escape both base their fleets here. Abel Point has full marina facilities, fuel, and multiple provisioning and boat maintenance services.
Port of Airlie
A smaller public marina and ferry terminal on the southern side of Airlie Beach. Primarily used by Cruise Whitsundays for their day tours and ferry services, but some smaller boat hire operators also work from here.
Shute Harbour
Located 10 minutes east of Airlie Beach. Historically the main departure point for the Whitsunday Islands, Shute Harbour is quieter now but some operators still run from here. It is closer to the islands, which means less travel time on the water.
Do You Need a Boat Licence?
Queensland does not require a recreational boat licence for operating vessels under certain conditions. For most charter and hire situations in the Whitsundays:
- Bareboat yacht charters: No formal licence required. The charter company assesses your competence during a vessel briefing. Prior boating experience is recommended but not legally mandated.
- Self-drive hire boats: No licence required. You receive a safety briefing covering vessel operation, navigation limits, and emergency procedures.
- Jet skis under commercial hire: No licence needed — the operator covers this under their commercial licence.
- Personal watercraft (your own jet ski): A Queensland recreational marine driver's licence is required.
If you hold a boat licence from another Australian state or from overseas, bring it along. It helps during the briefing process and may give you access to larger or more capable hire vessels.

What to Bring
Regardless of what you hire, bring:
- Reef-safe sunscreen — you will burn on the water, even on overcast days
- Hat and sunglasses with a strap so they do not blow off
- Towel and swimmers
- Drinking water — more than you think you need
- Snacks and lunch unless provisioning is included
- Waterproof phone case or dry bag — salt water and electronics do not mix
- Snorkelling gear if not provided (check with your operator)
- Cash or card for fuel (some operators charge separately)
For overnight charters, add soft bags instead of hard suitcases, warm layers for evening, and any medications including seasickness tablets if you are prone.
Suggested Routes for Day Hire
If you are hiring a self-drive boat or motorboat for the day from Airlie Beach:
Short route (half day): Cruise around Pioneer Bay and the coastline toward Cannonvale. Stop for a swim at one of the small beaches. Good for tinnies and smaller boats.
Medium route (full day, calm conditions): Head across to Daydream Island or South Molle Island. Both are relatively close to the mainland and accessible in moderate conditions. Check weather and fuel range with your hire operator before departing.
Longer route (full day, suitable vessel): With a larger motorboat, you can reach Hook Island or the southern tip of Whitsunday Island. This requires good weather and a vessel rated for the crossing. Always check conditions with your operator before attempting island crossings.
Whitehaven Beach is roughly 30 kilometres from Airlie Beach. Most self-drive hire boats do not have the range for a return trip. If Whitehaven is your goal, a day tour or yacht charter is the better option.
How to Book
Most operators accept online bookings through their websites, and many are also listed on aggregator sites like TripAdvisor, Viator, and GetYourGuide. For bareboat charters, booking directly with the operator usually gives you the best rate and the most flexibility with vessel selection.
For peak season (June to October), book yacht charters at least 3 months ahead. Self-drive boats and jet skis can usually be booked a few days out, but weekends and school holidays fill up fast.
